Are The Silver Physiotherapy Electrode Pad Better ?

July 12 , 2025

Silver  therapeutic electrode pads are a common auxiliary tool for physical therapy, mainly used in electrotherapy (such as TENS, EMS, etc.) or traditional Chinese conductive acupuncture and other physical therapies.

1. Excellent electrical conductivity

Silver paste has excellent electrical conductivity and can effectively transfer the low-frequency pulse current or medium-frequency current output by electrotherapy equipment, ensuring that the current is evenly distributed to the skin surface and enhancing the treatment effect.

Compared with ordinary electrode sheets, silver paste electrodes have more stable conductivity, lower resistance and reduced energy loss.

2. Relieve pain (such as TENS /EMS therapy)

By stimulating nerves with electric current to block the transmission of pain signals (gate control theory), or promoting the release of natural pain-relieving substances such as endorphins in the human body, it is applicable to:

① Chronic pain such as arthritis, muscle aches, and lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion.

② Auxiliary relief of sports injuries and postoperative pain.

3. Promote blood circulation and muscle recovery

EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) : Electrical current stimulates muscle contraction, improves local blood circulation, and prevents muscle atrophy.

It is commonly used for:

① Relaxation or rehabilitation training after exercise.

② Muscle function recovery after a stroke.

4. Anti-inflammatory and tissue repair

Some studies suggest that electrical stimulation can accelerate local metabolism and promote the dissipation of inflammation (such as periarthritis of the shoulder and tenosynovitis).

Silver ions themselves have antibacterial properties and may reduce the risk of skin contact infection (but it is necessary to pay attention to the disinfection of electrode plates or their one-time use).

5. Assist in traditional Chinese medicine treatment

It serves as a conductive medium in acupuncture or moxibustion, replacing traditional metal needles to achieve non-invasive electroacupuncture stimulation.

6. Precautions

① People with sensitive skin: Some people may be allergic to silver paste or conductive adhesive. Testing is required before use.

② Usage time: Each use should not be too long (usually 20-30 minutes) to avoid skin burns.

③ Cleaning and maintenance: Reusable electrode sheets need to be cleaned regularly to prevent the conductive adhesive from drying out and becoming ineffective.

④ Contraindicated groups: Patients with pacemakers, pregnant women, and those with broken skin are contraindicated.

The difference from traditional electrode pads :

   Characteristics

         Silver paste electrode pads

  Common carbon   /

 Gel electrode pads

Electrical conductivity Better, with uniform current distribution Generally, it may not be uniform
Service life Relatively long lifespan its ages easily and its electrical conductivity drops rapidly
    Cost      higher   lower

Silver paste therapeutic electrode pads enhance the effect of electrotherapy through efficient conductivity and are suitable for pain management, muscle rehabilitation and traditional Chinese medicine physiotherapy, but they need to be operated in a standardized manner. Goceng medical team suggets that when making a choice, it should be determined based on the treatment needs and skin adaptability. If necessary, consult a professional doctor for advice.
