Product Description

  1. Purpose:

    • The returning pad allows the electrical current from the active electrode to safely return to the electrosurgical generator after passing through the patient’s body. This helps to prevent electrical burns or other injuries.
  2. Design:

    • ESU returning pads are typically self-adhesive and made from flexible materials that conform to the contours of the patient’s skin. This design enhances skin contact and minimizes resistance, ensuring effective current dispersion.
    • They often feature a large surface area to distribute the electrical current evenly, reducing the likelihood of hot spots that could lead to burns.
  3. Single-Use and Reusable Options:

    • Returning pads are available in both disposable and reusable forms. Disposable pads are designed for single-use, enhancing sterility and reducing infection risk. Reusable pads can be sterilized and used multiple times, making them cost-effective in some settings.
  4. Placement:

    • The returning pad is typically placed on a large, well-perfused area of the patient’s body, such as the thigh, back, or buttocks. It should not be placed over bony prominences or areas of compromised skin, as this can increase the risk of burns.
  5. Connection:

    • The returning pad is connected to the electrosurgical generator through a lead wire, which ensures that the current can flow back to the generator safely. This connection is crucial for completing the electrosurgical circuit.
  6. Safety Features:

    • Many ESU returning pads have built-in safety features, such as impedance monitoring, which helps ensure proper contact with the patient’s skin. If the impedance rises above a certain threshold, the generator may be programmed to shut down to prevent burns.

Applications

  • Monopolar Electrosurgery: ESU returning pads are primarily used in monopolar electrosurgery, where the electrical current travels from the active electrode through the patient’s body and returns to the generator via the returning pad.
  • Surgical Procedures: Commonly used in various surgical specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, and ENT procedures, where precise cutting or coagulation of tissue is required.

Benefits

  1. Enhanced Safety: By dispersing electrical current over a larger area, the returning pad helps minimize the risk of burns or electrical injuries.
  2. Improved Surgical Precision: The safe return of current allows surgeons to focus on their work without worrying about unintended effects from improper current flow.
  3. Convenient and Easy to Use: The self-adhesive nature and flexible design of the pad make it easy to apply and remove.
